You don’t often think of baroque and electronic music together, especially not in combination. This unique fusion of instrumentation and genres is where TIËRNY sets herself apart. Self-described as “baroquetronica,” her music fuses classical orchestral elements, synths, electronic beats, and poetic lyricism to form a sound completely her own. Through her music, the forward-thinking contemporary alt-pop princess gives us a glimpse into the unique and diverse perspective of an existentialist woman living in the 21st century.
After releasing her debut single, “Solid Ground,” in 2019, the Liverpool-based singer-songwriter is back with a melancholic pop masterpiece, “I’ll Wait.” Characterized by a catchy hook, introspective lyrics, and emotive melodies, “I’ll Wait” is infectious. Written and co-produced by TIËRNY and her longtime collaborator MINAS (Dead Method /Agiris), this track makes heartbreak feel a little more palatable.
She had this to say of her new single, “I wanted to reflect the duality and irony of hate\love and that fine line you tread when in an all-consuming relationship. The person in question didn’t love me anymore. This was my way of trying to reconcile with one final declaration of love. It was me saying I’m still here if you ever change your mind. It’s a sad banger, the heartbreak you can dance to.”
I chatted with TIËRNY about her latest single, dream collaborations, writing process, and her unique “Baroquetronic” sound. Check it out below.
YMM: Congrats on your new single, “I’ll Wait” - what was the inspiration behind it?
T: “I’ll Wait” is a sad banger that explores strength and fragility. When I wrote it, I knew my whole life was falling apart, I knew everything I’d found stability in was about to be gone, and that it was my fault. It was me desperately holding on to hope with one final declaration of love.
YMM: What’s your writing process like? Do you have any rituals for writing sessions?
T: For me, it varies, but I’m constantly writing lyrics. One tip I would give is to always keep your phone by your bed at night for those late-night ideas. I have some of my best ideas in that space before you fall asleep and just writing it in notes or doing a quick voice memo is so helpful because you rarely remember in the morning! I co-produce all the music with my friend James (MINAS), he brings what’s inside my head to life, understands my vision. We have a lot of the same influences so we bounce off each other well creatively.
YMM: If you could choose three people to write with, who would they be and why?
T: Lana Del Rey; I love her lyrics and her use of metaphor. I think she’s a genius. MINEK; he’s a brilliant songwriter and I feel we could make an anthem. Jessie Reyez; I think she’s a truly gifted writer and it would be an empowering experience.
YMM: You describe your genre as “Baroquetronica” - how did you develop this style?
T: I’m fascinated with the Baroque period. The decadence, the unity of art and religion, the beautiful and the grotesque. Musically, I’m inspired by an amalgamation of genres and artists: Amy Winehouse, Fka Twigs, Charli XCX, Kanye West, Fiona Apple, Prince, The Cure. I didn’t go searching for a ‘sound’; it was more of an organic process.
YMM: Who are your biggest influences (dead or alive)?
T: Outside of music, Shakespeare, Pablo Neruda, Alexander McQueen, Rob Mapplethorpe, Ru Paul, Marina Ambromović.
YMM: Who have you been listening to lately? Any new artists we should check out?
T: I’m loving Deb Never at the moment. I’ve had “Ugly” and “Swimming” on repeat.
YMM: If you could tour with any band/artist, who would it be?
T: There are so many people I’d love to tour with, I think Years & Years, MARINA, and The 1975 are all front runners.
YMM: How has your music been impacted by COVID? Has anything changed for you?
T: It’s affected me in terms of live performance which is sad as I was hoping to book some festivals this Summer! On the flip side, it’s given me more time to focus and be creative which I’m grateful for.
YMM: What’s next for you? Do you have anything in the pipeline that you can tell us about?
T: I’m releasing my debut EP, REVELATIONS, later in the year and I’m hoping to do a short film/installation to premier at the release party which I’m very excited about! Apart from that just continuing to create and taking each day as it comes.
